Why would you need LINK EXCHANGES for SEO?

Two main reasons, to get traffic, to get higher PR. Go to  http://xchangetextlinks.com/ and sign yourself up. Much better than banner exchanges-the site offers you the chance to immidiatly take part in relevant text link exchanges-I will explain why this is important in a momment.

Ok, lets say that your site sells cat food. The best thing for you to do in SEO terms is to link with other cat/food/cat product related sites with PR. In SEO terms even if you can get a PR 4 site selling golf balls to link to you, search engines may mark it as a non- relevant link exchange and ignore it. Far better to get links from similar or closely related sites.

If you own a huge network of sites....be vey carefull about linking them all up. Instead, try linking sites a-b to c-d instead. The search engines can detect patterns, and if you link every single one of your sites up ro all the others-they will smell a rat and penalise you! Not the way to SEO.

Try a google search and look for sites similar or related to your own ans email the webmasters requesting an exchange. Try to wait a short time till your site has at least a little PR-other webmasters are more likely to agree to an exchange if you do.

Be careful who you link too-google them and make sure that the site has not been banned, or that the webmaster that you are exchanging with is not a cheat. Google them-if they are someone  who cheats it is very likely someone has reported them before on a webmaster board at some point.

Check up on your link exchanges every so often, you may find that people cheat and remove your link-or they could have had a mishap and accidently lost your link. Some webmasters may be worse than cheats and re-direct your link to illegal sites-so check up on them from time to time.

Three way linking explained. Now I have talked all through the site about one way backlinks. A one way link (These means site A links to your site and your site does not link back) are very valuable to you in SEO terms. So do get your site in as many non reciprical link directories as possible. Also-if you know any bloggers-see if they are prepaired to 'review' your site adding a link to it. Now, once you have got a few link exchanges or are a regular on a few webmaster boards, you may be in a position to set up some three way linking. Three way link exchanges work this way-You have 2 cat food sites A AND B. You get chatting to a webmaster who has 2 cat fod sites 1 and 2. Now, you agree to link to site 1 from site A of your sites, he links to site A of your site on his site 2. So instead of direct site to site straight link swops-you can both link to each other from different sites to the original site in question.

To explain it another way in SEO terms, you may well see posts such as this on webmaster boards:

What exactly is SEO and why do I need it?

SEO stands for search engine optimization -- what it means is to have your website optimized for maximum recognition by the search engines(sometimes termed as search engine ready), so your site will recieve traffic and PR and have a prominent position in the search engines-that's why you need it.

It prepares your web site to be spidered, indexed and ranked by the major search engines so that when internet users search for your keywords, your website will appear on their results page. When properly executed, search engine optimization yields targeted traffic to the site and increases revenues. Simple really SEO=MORE TRAFFIC=SALES!

Meta Tags

There are theories that haunt all seo boards and fall from jadded webmaster lips that say... meta tags do not weigh as heavily as they used to. This is considered an “on- site” optimization and has heavily been abused by black hat webmasters to gain an enhanced result position. However properly constructed meta tags are beneficial to a large degree and will reap benefits with all search engines.  Lets face, if there is a slim chance that I'm right on this- is it worth risking leaving them and not doing them at all/ Will the few minutes it will take you be better spent elsewhere-no, I think not! It may not influence some as much as it once did but I still feel them to be relevant Remember, the intent is  to drive qualified traffic to your site and not a massive load of non- converting traffic? It's not all and only about the SE's, you need the right surfer landing on your site too.

Linking Strategies

It is a critical piece of the SEO puzzle to learn about linking strategies and apply them wisely. A preferred method of linking is through directories and selected link partners. Every back link increases the chances that a search engine will find your site and index the pages. Also, each back link counts toward your overall “Page Rank” which may influence search result placement in certain se's. Be careful and don’t link to less than ideal sites (link farms, etc)  as this will have the opposite affect to what you are striving for.

As part of every linking campaign I would suggest submitting the site to every free directory that you can find.( See our main index for listings all in one easy to find place) There are hundreds of free directories that will include your site if it has quality content and it won’t cost anything other than your time. Once done with the free submission ones, begin on the paid inclusion directories. How many and which ones will be determined by your budget and personal/industry prefference. If you refuse to pay for a directory listing I strongly encourage you to reconsider once you feel that your site is well established.

Ezines, toplists, newsgroups, articles directories, ppc, special interest Chat boards, and even a little offline marketing from time to time should also not be discounted.

SEO - A Clever ongoing tactic.

The number one problem of most webmasters lack of spending on search engine optimization campaigns is under funding the whole thing. I stognly suggest that you put aside a portion of your profits to allow for an seo budget as an ongoing expense. Remeber your website is your store, your shopfront and if presented and marketed correctly-you best sales rep to boot.
